On Probation

On probation

What is the point of probation periods?  Primarily they are there to give employers the opportunity to evaluate whether their new employee really is right for the job (based on skills, performance, conduct, etc).  it's a chance to further test the skills and experience claimed at interview and establish whether they fit within the current team.

In the interest of success, the new employee should be given a full brief of what is expected of them in those first weeks/months.  The expected achievements and code of conduct should be made very clear and regular meetings should be held to discuss progress and any areas of concern.

All being well, the probation period should encourage an employee to make the most of the chance to prove themselves and make a valued contribution.
